Do you struggle to keep your decanter or carafe clean and stain free? Struggle no more, in this blog post I will take you through a few simple, yet effective ways of cleaning your decanters!
Decanter Cleaning Beads
What you will need
- Decanter Cleaning Beads
- Warm Water
Decanter beads can be purchased on-line for around £7.99 and can be used time and time again.
Method for cleaning your decanter
- First rinse the decanter with clean warm water to remove any liquid and soften any stains.
- Empty the decanter and refill with clean warm water making sure any stains are covered.
- Pour in the cleaning beads.
- Whilst carefully holding onto the neck of the decanter, and supporting it at the base, gently swirl it around. The steel beads will gently roll around and remove any stains.
- When you think the decanter is clean, empty the liquid (make sure to save your beads), rinse and leave to dry.
If the stains are particularly bad you may need to repeat the above steps, replacing the dirty water with clean each time.
White Wine Vinegar and Salt
What you will need
- White Wine Vinegar
- Coarse Salt
- Warm Water
This method is great as you will probably have most of what you need in your cupboards, and vinegar is brilliant at breaking down stubborn stains
Method for cleaning your decanter
- First, rinse the decanter with clean water to remove any liquid sitting at the bottom.
- Fill the decanter with lukewarm water and leave to soak for a few minutes, this will help soften any marks and loosen any deposits.
- Now you are ready for the salt and white wine vinegar. Empty the warm water, and then pour in approximately 2cm of coarse salt into the decanter, top this up with twice as much white wine vinegar.
- Place your hand over the top of the decanter and shake well, in various directions. The salt/vinegar solution should start to change colour as it removes the stains. Again, depending on how tough the stains are you may need to repeat this step.
- Once you are happy with how your decanter is looking carefully empty the solution away.
- Now, you really don’t want your decanter smelling of vinegar afterwards so make sure you rinse well with plenty of clean warm water.
Additional note, you could replace the salt with uncooked rice.
Denture Tablets
What you will need
- Denture Tablets
- Warm Water
Method for cleaning your decanter
A popular way of cleaning a decanter is using denture tablets. It takes a little time to work so is not necessarily the one to use if you are after a quick clean up.
- As always, rinse your decanter with clean warm water to remove any excess liquid.
- Fill with warm water and leave to soak for 10-20 minutes. This will loosen any stains ready for the next step.
- Empty the decanter, and then place one denture tablet into the decanter and fill with enough warm water to cover the stains.
- Leave for as long as possible, but at least half an hour.
- When you are happy that all the stains have been removed, empty the solution away and rinse several times with lots of warm water to make sure no solution is left and the decanter is clean.
And there you have it, clean decanters and carafes. The methods above are also useful on other glass items for example glass bottles with long narrow necks or even vases that you cant get your hands into.
